Red & Near-Infrared Light Therapy, Explained
Red light therapy is a non-invasive wellness practice that uses specific wavelengths of red and near-infrared light, measured in nanometers (nm). Different wavelengths interact with the body at different depths, which is why red and near-infrared light are often used together in at-home beauty and wellness routines.
Red light, commonly in the 630–660 nm range, is visible to the eye and interacts primarily with more superficial tissues. In beauty and skincare applications, these wavelengths are widely used to support the appearance of smoother-looking skin, improved tone, and a healthy glow.
Near-infrared light (NIR) begins just beyond the visible spectrum and includes wavelengths commonly used in light therapy devices such as 810 nm, 830 nm, 850 nm, and 940 nm. Near-infrared wavelengths can penetrate more deeply into tissue than visible red light and are often incorporated into devices and routines focused on broader beauty and wellness applications, including muscle comfort, relaxation, and post-workout recovery.
